All carpet cleaning detergents are simply not going to be safe on your wool carpet.
Cleaning Wool Carpet
You can normally keep wool carpet looking fresh and new by routine vacuuming and cleaning up spills quickly. Vacuum horizontally and then vertically to ensure that you have effectively removed all dirt and soil. Generally speaking, wool carpet is resistant to dust, dirt and stains to a certain degree. Spills clean up very easily because wool is naturally resistant to moisture. You can simply blot spills with a dry cloth and avoid any unsightly stains. Vacuuming should be done at least once or twice each week, depending on the activity and traffic flow in the room. Regular vacuuming and quickly cleaning up spills will keep your wool carpet healthy for a number of years.
Spot Cleaning
When spot cleaning, it is important that you choose wool carpet cleaners that are safe for use on the fibers in your carpet. Never put bleach on wool carpet to remove stains. There are a number of products on the market that are very safe for use on wool. Be certain that you take the time to find a product that can be used with wool before you clean stains. Most stains can be removed by simply blotting the stain or spot with a clean cloth and warm water. It is important that you make sure that any wet spots on the carpet are dry before vacuuming, to protect the wool fibers.
Deep Cleaning
For those times when you want to completely shampoo your wool carpet it is again important that you choose only those wool carpet cleaners that are safe for use on wool. Woolite and other fabric cleaners are an excellent choice as they have been proven to be safe on wool fibers. There are also carpet cleaners available that can be used. Wool is naturally resistant to most stains. Of course this does not mean that it cannot be stained. It is simply easier to clean spills from wool because the fibers repel liquids. There are a number of small carpet cleaning kits available that are safe for use on wool carpets and contain different products for different stains and spills. Keep in mind that most carpet spills contain some type of oil which can be cleaned easily with just a solution of water and a gentle liquid detergent. Again, be certain that the detergent you are using is safe. You may want to test it in an inconspicuous area before shampooing the entire carpet if you are unsure of its effects.
